Uncharted 2 remains unfinished…

by Steve "Slurms" Lichtsinn

I was smoking along through Uncharted 2. Before the weekend ended, I had reached chapter 25.  I’ve read that there are 26 chapter in the game so, yeah, I’m freekin close. But something is standing in my way. My television….won’t turn on.

It’s been having some problems for a while. You could turn it on, but it would shut itself back off and flash some red lights. After cutting the power, and then turning it back on again, I’d be in business. But as time went on over the last couple months, it got worse and worse. Until finally, it just wouldn’t turn on. After doing some research, it turns out this is a common problem with this series of Philips 42″ plasmas. I also found out repairs could get around 300-500 bucks if you take it to a shop. Or, alternatively, you could fix it yourself for about $15.

Here’s the culprits:

The two bulged capacitors in the middle of the picture are the cause of my sadness. Good news is that I got the replacements in the mail today, so hopefully I’ll be back in business tomorrow.

Wish me luck, I hope this does it!

UPDATE: IT’S FIXED!!!

    Nice… $15 and a little ingenuity sounds a lot better than $500.

Bad capacitors… the plague of consumer electronics that refuses to go away.

I’ve been hit with bad capacitors multiple times in the past, and if this ever hits anyone else here, I highly recommend the many excellent resources (including a repair service, do-it-yourself info and fascinating background information on the origin and spread of the capacitor plague) at http://www.badcaps.net. I’ve saved a $700 Cisco switch using the BadCaps repair service.
