You Beta Answer This Question
There seems to be a lot of talk on the forums and twitter regarding beta’s. People hoping they get an invite or discussions about getting into certain games. This is something I never understood. I never sign up for beta’s and when I get a random invite because of my affiliation with some company because I bought their products, I never sign up. Even if it is a game I am super excited about, like SWTOR – I still wouldn’t sign up. I cannot comprehend playing a game that is not finished and my character gets wiped out. To me that’s like going to see half a movie and someone takes away my popcorn after two bites. I understand the need for a beta, it allows the gamers to provide valuable input to the game designers. I just don’t have the time to put into something like that without getting the full benefit out of it. I play games to be immersed into the world presented in front of me and I want that experience to be seamless. There is something exciting about launch day and playing the beta would take some of that magic away.
What drives you to play in a beta? To “try out” the game before you buy it; to actually work on the mechanics and provide feedback to the developers; or just to say you played it before anyone else? I am interested in hearing your thoughts on this.

I have mixed feelings about beta. My most prolonged experience was for WAR, testing for over a year. On the one hand, testing and having input was both fun and interesting. On the other hand, when it goes on as long as that did, playing the game at release was not quite as exciting as it would have been otherwise.
These days, I only sign up for beta if I am bored & not involved in another game. I definitely consider it more a sneak peek these days Vs serious testing in my case.
I’m glad I’m not in the beta for SWTOR. I’m going into that game completely blind.
I like the testing aspect, particularly when they give you a list of specific things they want tested, but also like to preview, at least in the MMORPG cases since they typically do not have a demo/trial until well after release, and I don’t like to spend money on what could end up being a turd. Holy run on sentence!
