WAR Stories: Tales of a Dysfunctional Warband
One of the things I like about Warhammer Online is that they have made grouping a simple thing. Since many of my friends are no longer playing, it is nice to be able to hop into scenarios and join open warbands. Sometimes these warbands are great. Other times, they make me want to take a very long drink of something strong.
This Sunday was one of the latter. I was playing T2 Order on Gorfang. It left a very sour taste in my mouth. I tried different times of the day with the same results. Every warband I joined seemed to be full of bickering, whining 8 year olds who needed a spanking. I understood quickly why Order only held one single keep in all of T2. I’ve seen better cooperation amongst a bunch of dyslexic, presbyopic, middle aged men who have forgotten their reading glasses and trying to put together an “easy to assemble” kid’s toy with an instruction manual that is 14 pages long.
It went something like this. We held Spite’s Reach. Destruction had a small group of people trying to take it. A group of Order was fighting them off outside.
“Get inside the keep! Let them touch the door!”
No response. Blood lust continues.
“You idiots! Get inside the keep! You are ruining this for everyone!”
Some pause.
“What? The keep is safe. We drove them off. How is that a bad thing?”
“If they don’t ding the keep, we lose our defensive bonus tic. You are doing this all for nothing.”
“Nothing? How is it nothing? We fought them off. That’s the idea.”
“No, you noob! We get more xp and RR for letting them actually ding the keep.”
“Screw you. It’s fun.”
“Fun? Why do you even bother defending a keep then if you don’t want the bonus? You ruined it for every one else here. Go play a scenario.”
“Everyone in this keep can blame all you idiots outside for not getting anything out of their fun.”
“Why bother defending a keep if you are going to hide in it and not fight?”
“I, for one, heard there would be cookies.”
Yeah, the last part was what I had to offer to the conversation. Personally, while I like the gear that is insanely easy to get right now, the fact is it’s a game. Games are supposed to be fun. I’d rather have a blast playing than have the most uber gear. I despise the warbands that are just going for the renown. “I run my warbands to maximize experience. Therefore, we will be taking empty keeps and going where there is the least amount of resistance.” I left that warband. What fun is that? I love a good defensive keep stand. Taking an empty keep presents little challenge. Well, it should. I was actually in a group that wiped 4 times on a an empty keep, leading to yet another interesting Warband conversation.
It has been rather disappointing to see the amount of name calling and finger pointing going on in these keep takes. “Do that again, and I’m booting you.” This told to someone who made a bad pull. Which degenerates into “Those are the worst pulls ever. Learn to play, noob.” “Find another class to play, because you suck.”Wow. Seriously? People just need to get a grip sometimes. And play nice with others. No cookies for you!

From my experience, as you join Warbands in Tier 3 and 4, people are much more mature. Personally, when I’m leading warbands I give asshats one warning and then they’re gone.
I will however, admit that I do try to maximize the amount of renown and experience my warbands will get, though that by no means implies I only go fight empty keeps. On the contrary, I find heavily defensive keeps offer much more renown and (of course) fun.
I understand there are those who want to get the max experience out of it. But I also understand that there are others who just want to kill and have fun. Both play styles are fine. What I don’t like is the people who feel the need to belittle others because what they want out of the game is different.
I actually didn’t have a problem with the warband leader who announced his intent for his warband. It just wasn’t what I wanted, so I left. He wasn’t a tool about it, just stated what his goal for the warband was.
And yes, I recall T2 always being the worst in terms of disorganization and immaturity.
Hey Maeve –
I also greatly disliked T1 thru T3 open RvR for many of these same reasons… and as Rer says the tone changes greatly in T4.
If anything, we are even more cooperative on Gorfang then we were on PT… when realm leaders ask in global chat for people to hold off on taking flags until more people show up, guess what? It actually happens! There have been a few testy moments during botched city sieges but that’s about it.
Also, I didn’t know you made an Order on Gorfang. What’s your name/class? Whatever it is, I have lots of free goodies for you
I’m playing Maevriel, a level 12 AM and Mavery, a BW somewhere in that same level range.
Well butter my biscuits, we should play together sometime! I’ve got a SW, KotBS, and WP in T2.
T1 Warband:
“Get to Docks”
“No Abbreviations plz”
“The docks, you know the Battle Objective”
“HEALERS YOU GUYS SUCK”
“Well kill better then”
“HERE COMES ORDER”
“RUN GUYS”
-The Warband runs away from 1 BW-
“You gIz are Noobz, it was one BW”
“Healers suck”
“Healers suck”
“Healers suck”
“Healers suck”
“Healers suck”
“Healers suck”
Blaming the healer never goes out of style. Another favorite of mine from T1 is people complaining about healers not rezzing. One guy kept sending my level 6ish Zealot tells in a scenario complaining that I wasn’t rezzing him and eventually “eff you” (except he didn’t say eff). Hello? Healers get their rez at level 10.
