3DS Price Drop…….eeeehhhhhh
I find it funny how much timing plays into when I make purchases. When the 3DS was released, I wasn't very up on the idea of a 3D handheld (though, I'm hardly ever up on the idea of ANY handheld). But I got my hands on one a couple times and thought, "since I don't actually own a DS, maybe this could be my entrance into the platform."
Now, if you’ve heard me mention on the podcast that we have a DS in the Steve household, you heard correctly. We have one and it’s my wife’s (which I’ve used on occasion). So I bugged her a couple times once the 3DS was released about letting me spend the money on one. It was the new hotness, and I like hotness. But she laughed hard enough that I knew it was not to be. I still wanted one and eyed the boxed wistfully every time I walked by in the store.
Time goes on and I eventually let the idea of owning a 3DS leak out of my brain much like things I learned in high school. How do you divide fractions again? Anyways:
THE ANNOUNCEMENT!
Nintendo comes out of NOWHERE (Japan?) and informs the masses that they’re slashing prices like Crazy Eddie! Their newest handheld will be going down to a more economical $169. WOW! That’s…..eh….
I know people love the device and others are taking the good news as a sign to go right out and purchase one once the new stickers are slapped on the boxes. Unsurprisingly, as someone who isn’t into handheld gaming all that much, I’m still not sold. I previously detracted from the comments others have made about “handheld gaming from the likes of Nintendo and Sony are sure to be on the way out given tablets and smartphones,” but they may have been right. It probably won’t end with the 3DS. No doubt Nintendo already has something in early development, and no doubt Sony will decide future portables based on how well the Vita does, but in the long run I think we’ll see them go away.
Or maybe have phone plans added to them.

I will never get used to handheld gaming so the price or quality of the product actually does zero to sway me.
I actually prefer dedicated handheld gaming machines and a phone that’s just a phone. I’m a dinosaur, I guess.
Still, the price drop does make the 3DS more attractive. Maybe when my venerable DS finally dies.
Yeah, an 80$ price reduction. Awesome. thanks Nintendo, that fits right in the hole in my budget. I just wish I had waited until after the drop to get one, instead of getting one and hardly playing it at all until Zelda was released. Dammit.
