Diablo 3 Beta Begins. Where is Torchlight 2?

The internet is exploding with delight over the news that Diablo 3’s beta has finally begun. This can only mean that the game is just a few steps away from being yours to own, but I have to wonder, what does this mean for Torchlight 2?

It was my assumption, given that Runic Games wanted to release the sequel to their top down hack ‘n slasher this summer that the intent was to get money from those who are anxiously awaiting Diablo 3. That’s not to say that the game doesn’t deserve attention on its own. Given that it will release at a third of the cost of Diablo 3 and will give you much of the same sort of experience, it appears to be the far better deal. The fact is that there’s no denying that Diablo 3 will still sell like mad, because it’s Diablo 3.

I just wonder though, with Diablo’s beta in full swing, will this deter people from picking up Torchlight 2?

I didn’t like Tourchlight. My PC gaming life started with Diablo and Doom. The only other top down slasher I like was Baulder’s Gate

  • Richard says:

I adored Torchlight, so they could release 2 the same day as Diablo 3 and I’d still pick it up. I think it’s value proposition will make it just as successful, if not more so, than the original. Then again, I’m not very likely to pay $60 for any game on launch day anymore, ao although Diablo 3 looks like it’ll be fun, it’ll probably be a long while before I get that one.

  • Bronte says:

It’s a pity isn’t it? Torchlight, for all of it’s quirky fun, obviously cannot match up to the technological and developmental behemoth that is Diablo 3. But I was really hoping for a chance to play torchlight 2 before Diablo 3 released, not just because I am itching for a good hack n’ slash, but also because Torchlight, in its own way, it a superior game, crafted out of love for the genre.

Maybe they will release it? I mean Blizzard is notorious for endless delays until they know for a fact they can ship on a particular date. given that there is no date yet. I’d say we have some time.

  • Pazzolupo says:

Torchlight was a nice and seamless game. The main problem was that it was the equivalent as the first Diablo, minus the multiplayer. Run in a downward circle against seemingly endless baddies until you fight the main dude. In a single player game that was too tedious without my friends. I’m not saying its a bad thing, but with Diablo 2, and the upcoming Diablo 3 the scenery changes pretty frequently.

With Torchlight 2 there are outdoor areas, multiplayer modes and more than the standard three character classes (we’re up to FOUR now!). I think it will be a nice distraction, but once Diablo 3 releases there will be no denying the quality and complexity put into Blizzard games.

Personally, I might pick up Torchlight 2 if it comes out before Diablo 3. If it manages to release afterwards though I won’t even consider the game to be in existence.

  • Tesh says:

I’m not a fan of the Diablo IP, so Torchlight is the perfect dungeon crawler for me. I’ll pick up T2 totally regardless of what D3 does.

That said, I was hoping it would be out by now to generate some buzz without D3 stealing its lunch. I’m not sure that their timing will work out. On the other hand, there’s something to be said for waiting for the opportune moment and actually getting the game as polished as it can be, rather than letting D3 dictate the timetable.

  • Steve "Slurms" Lichtsinn says:

    @ Tesh

I think they wanted it out by now so they could get that buzz. I totally agree that I’d rather them release a good product because, honestly, if it came out and was junk, everyone would just go back to waiting for D3.

I just wonder if the recent announcement of D3′s beta took some wind out of their sales.

Get it?!? SALES? instead of ……sails… right? ….uuuggghhh…

  • pasmith says:

Wait what? Isn’t Torchlight 2 coming out this fall? Torchlight 2 will be out way way before Diablo 3 hits. [I predict Diablo 3 will be a June 2012 release.] The Diablo 3 beta, from everything I’ve read, is pretty short… if anything it might get people in the mood to play something longer, and there will be Torchlight 2 waiting to be purchased.

  • Steve "Slurms" Lichtsinn says:

Oh, have they said it wasn’t going to be this year? Last time I read, they still wanted it out in 2011. But, it IS Blizzard.

  • Pazzolupo says:

There’s no possible way Diablo 3 is coming out this year. That being said, I have no idea when Torchlight 2 was slated for release either. I crave dungeon crawlers in general though, so from what I’ve seen of Torchlight 2 I might pick it up (as long as it is before D3). It is essentially a carbon copy of Diablo 2 with much better graphics, which is fine by me. I will likely give it a shot, especially if it is a similar price to Torchlight 1.

  • Blue Kae says:

I’m skipping Diablo 3, I was never a fan of the original one and the always-on crap Blizzard is enforcing has killed what little interest I had developed in D3. I will pick up Torchlight 2 though, I had fun with the first one, although I lost interest in it after a month or so, but for $20 T2 will still be worth it even if I lose interest quickly.

  • I am very much looking forward to D3! :)

  • Bob says:

I’m sure torchlight 2 will be out before D3. With multiplayer, TL2 should be a blast.

  • Titan says:

I have the D3 Beta and believe me its not to die for, it ok but it has a certain lackluster feel to it which im currently trying to pin point 2ndly Act one is way too short and easy it seems to me blizz focus on D3 is the RL auction house. Its a ok game. I think i will have a more fun experience with TL 2, being that part one mad me a fan.

  • John says:

Torchlight 2 is already dead IMO, if only for the sheer fail at marketing. About the only thing the game had going for it was releasing before Diablo III. Not only does it look like that isn’t going to happen now, Runic Games has somewhat alienated their fan base by failing to launch at least 3 seperate times now (a bad habit the devs started at Blizzard). If that wasn’t enough, poor news updates, weird characters, kiddie graphics engine, and absolutely no strategy (if the first is any indication). $30 more is totally worth it to get a polished game with a huge community. Sorry Runic, but you need to go back to marketing 101.
