Help me fill up my iPad!

If you remember in my last post, I mentioned that the wife and I made some money from our garbage sale. Well since the purchase of a Neo Geo cabinet was in question, I decided to go another route; we pooled our money and ordered an iPad.

Now, I’ve been skeptical of the necessity of such a device for a while, but my wife had a chance to play with a coworkers a few weeks ago and immediately fell in love with some of the educational benefits as well as the idea of being able to browse the internet while parked on the couch. WE SO LAZY!

I, on the other hand, had been admiring many of the minor facets of the tablet. Between the Sketchbook Pro and GarageBand apps, as well as the ability to read comics, I was willing to be the good husband and father and fork over my personal play money to buy the gizmo for the whole family. I still don’t know if it’s going to amaze me in any way (I’ve never used one) but I am nonetheless excited to be welcoming another gadget into my home.

While I’m sure that there’s a bunch of other apps and game out there that are probably “must buys” I don’t know what they are. That’s where you come in. I don’t have the iPad yet, currently it’s estimated that I’ll have it some time around the middle of next month, but I want to be prepared for it. So, if you own an iPad or have played with one, what games or apps do you think are “must have’s?”

  • The main strength of the size of the Ipad versus the phone, is board games. Carcassone is fantastic, with great multiplayer. You could get games going with Zeli and me. There are lots of different board games, and that is the main reason I want one. I know Ticket to Ride just came out, which is a pretty fun game. Both of those are pretty easy to pick up and learn the rules.

Also, Mirror’s Edge is shockingly good. Plants versus Zombies is great on it as well, and I don’t think you have played that.

Also check out Shadow Era, a Magic the Gathering type game. It is free to download. I tried it on my phone, but the screen is too cramped, should be great on the Ipad.

  • pasmith says:

Battleheart! 100 Rogues! Sword & Sworcery! (spelling intentional), Hunters HD (turn-based tactical combat goodness).

Also Netflix (if you have an account), ComiXology (if you’re a comics guy), Feedly or Reeder (if you’re an RSS guy), Kindle app and Nook app (if you’re an ebook guy).

  • Scopique says:

WTH DIDN’T I KNOW ABOUT SHADOW ERA!?

Lots of stuff depending on what you want it for. Honestly, I found that I’ve rarely done much gaming. But, looking at what I have on mine now:

    Evernote
    Blogsy (for writing posts)
    DropBox
Splashtop (remote desktop client which allows you to actually play SOME games on the iPad, executing on the PC. Hit or miss, really)
    Skype
NASA App (if you’re into that kind of thing)
PBS/ABC/HBOGO (If you’re into those kinds of things)
    Pandora
    Kindle
DisplayLink (Lets you use your iPad as an extra desktop monitor for your PC)
    Small World
    Civilization Revolution
    Eden (Minecraft clone)
    Hunters HD
    Dungeon Defenders
    Galaxy On Fire 2
    Pocket Legends
    Aralon HD

And if you really want to disgust yourself: Order & Chaos XD

  • Gonna keep an eye on this, as I’m always on the lookout for new apps too. I’m not so much a game person though.

Some apps I use that haven’t been mentioned already:

    Pulse (for news)
Stanza (for reading books and docs)
    Dragon dictation
    Goodreads
Book Crawler (to catalogue all my books)
xfinity (or your personal cable provider, if they have an app)
Showyou (not finding I use it a lot though, but it’s great if you watch a lot of videos and have a lot of friends that share videos)
Air Video (I use it to stream stuff from my PC hard drive, and to convert videos to itunes format)
    Penultimate
    Adobe Ideas
    Photoshop Express
ComicSeal (what I use to organize and read comics)
    GroceryiPad (shopping list)
    Bank app

  • I suggest:

Order & Chaos Online (If you want an MMO to dink around in)
    Sword of Fargoal
    Aralon HD
    Plants vs Boobies
    Zen Bound 2
Let’s Create! Pottery (relaxing, casual, and fun)
    Netflix
    Pandora
Rhapsody (more appropriate on iPod/iPhone, but to me it is an “on the go” music lover’s dream)

I also agree with Jason’s suggestion of Mirror’s Edge – it’s very good.

Grats on your purchase. I’d love to have one, but my 4th gen touch is doing me just fine right now!

I like Where’s Waldo game for the kids or big ass kids like myself. Reversemaze if very challenging in a good way. And if you like free comics Darkhorse and Archie comics have a lot of free issues to get. There’s a Stardoll app for virtual paper dolls for your girl which my girl liked when she was younger.

Just picked up Companions for my ipad. Great game. HBO go is also a great app. I don’t have hbo but I’m using my fathers login.

I’ve never played Carcassone….I think that will be an early purchase for me.

Shadow Era sounds like an easy decision. FREE BITCHES!

I second Reeder for RSS. Pete recommended that one to me as well as Instapaper to store articles I want to read later, and I use them both constantly!
