LoL: Practice makes decent
After watching some of Rer’s Coldcasts, I got the urge to try out League of Legends again. I still had the game loaded on my PC, so without much delay I fired up the game and let it patch last week. Now, almost every night I wait anxiously for the kids to fall asleep so I can jump into LoL.
This marks my third stint with League of Legends. The first time I checked the game out was because I’d heard so much about it. I wound up hating it. Even went as far as to say it was boring. I was later convinced to check it out again by some of my fellow Multiplayers. I still didn’t think much of the game at the time, but something clicked. I had this urge to go back and play it again. It wasn’t long before I went out and picked up the box version so I could get a decent number of champions to play around with.
I played until level 13 (max is 30), got to the point where I was mediocre with a couple of champs, and then went off to play other games. That was last year. I started playing again last week and I feel more hooked than ever before. It’s almost like when I was deep into Super Street Fighter IV. I’m watching streams, reading up on tactics and builds online, heck, I’ve even set up my own streaming channel for shits and giggles (not that I’ve used it yet, still a bit shy about showing people how awful I am).
There’s something about League of Legends that reminds me very much of an MMO. At the same time, its community is the absolute best and worst thing about the game. If you take the risk of delving into the games forums or if you get matched with or against certain players, you will be faced with people who you would never want to associate yourself with. The inverse is that there are also people just like you out there. There’s even people who are out there genuinely trying to help others out. Take for instance Rakalakalili’s LoL Lessons website. This guy set up a site devoted to taking in user videos and telling them what they did wrong or how they can improve their game.
I may not be great at the game, but thanks to people like this, and as much play time as I can fit in, I may one day be considered “okay” at playing League of Legends.

That is the great thing about LoL. You could get really good with a champion, but there is always that one guy who will crack you. Your team will let you down, you will get left behind in team fights. Novice players will not assist you as they should have.
LoL’s learning curve is like Fibonacci’s spiral, it keeps on looping and looping!
