Ooh, ooh, me too!!
So last night before bed, my wife wanted to go over the checkbook. She really knows how to turn a guy on let me tell you. As we went over some of the weekends withdrawals, we came across 10 in a row from Mythic. The real kicker is that I asked my wife to check the account on Friday as all the chaos was happening and she found nothing. Usually, our account will show withdrawals as “pending” until they are actually deducted from the total, but we never saw that. The nice part is that the money has already been placed back into our account and we were not overdrawn. We got off light compared to some.
The question is what camp do you move to when you get hit by something like this? I was tempted to make a post on Friday regarding the ordeal, but I really wanted more info on what was going on, and I had not been affected (or so I thought) so I was viewing the whole situation from a different perspective. People were having all sorts of reactions to having their accounts hijacked. Some playing the game debated on quitting (some already have), or figured it was a one time deal that will get fixed. People not playing assuredly thought, “Oh man I’m so glad I’m not playing that game”, or “I’m so glad I keep my money in my socks.”
As I mentioned on episode 29, I do feel bad for those who went into the weekend with no access to their bank accounts because of being overdrawn. Not many things are as infuriating as being told you can’t have your money. I also feel kind of bad for Mythic. It’s not like they asked for this bad press. It wasn’t like the developer team at Mythic hatched some crazy Office Space type scheme to get rich and it backfired on them. It was most likely either a database error or a human screw up involving the billing system. If it’s a human error, I won’t argue, that person should lose their job if they already haven’t.
What needs to happen now is for Mythic to tell us what happened. If we don’t find out, then I’ll be worried. I’m almost willing to bet it was a human error, and that’s why we haven’t heard anything yet. In the end, I truly believe they reacted to the situation as best and as fast as they could. Whether you feel comfortable keeping your account information with them now is your decision, but I have to say that there’s shadier looking folk who take my card information at the grocery store.

I think you guys did a respectable job addressing the issue on the podcast. Personally, if someone likes the game, I don’t think this situation is anything to rage quit over. Like you said, it’s not like the dev team (or probably anyone for that matter) intended for this to happen. Go ahead and get angry, but it’s a SNAFU that’s being fixed.
I do feel bad for all this happened to, but hang in there and work with your bank/credit union if it created a hardship for you.
In this day and age that is pretty unacceptable. As someone that used to write credit card transaction software, you NEVER push changes out until they are tested, retested, and tested once again. Nothing builds ill will faster for your business than monkeying around with your customers credit cards.
