Slurms Pondering of the day: MMO Developers

monkey-thinking

Now, I don’t have a query about current MMO developers like Blizzard, Mythic, NC Soft, Icarus, or anyone else. I want to know who you think would be a great MMO developer. We are looking forward to Star Wars: The Old Republic for a couple reasons. One is because it’s freekin’ Star Wars. The other is because it’s being made by BioWare, a company with rich and creamy storytelling flowing through their veins. The obvious first choice for me would be Valve. Another company who’s had nothing to do with MMO’s, but seems to have the ability to make great games. They have a knack for creating amazing set pieces, and from playing loads of Team Fortress 2, they seem to understand class balance.

Dear reader, who do you want to make an MMO?

I so want a Left4Dead MMO now…LFShotgunner and Medic for Tank farming pst…Although there would over 9000 variations of the name Francis though.

Naughtydog (I believe that’s who makes the Rachet and Clank series) for mainly creating a really kick ass franchise in R&C. I think they could apply this to a good shooter MMO like Borderlands or even try something completely different.

    Me!

Or maybe a shooter MMO with a bit of edge to it. A Borderlands mmo would be sweet. Or a Battlefield mmo.

  • Rer says:

Level 5 Entertainment, creators of the Dark Cloud Series, Rogue Galaxy, and White Knight. They’re my favorite console gaming company hands down. They fabricated tales about human behavior and morality that were so deep and moving that I cried during certain scenes. From a pure story perspective, I’d love to see what they could come up with.

  • Shadow War says:

UbiSoft. I love the Prince of Persia games. Splinter Cell games. Hell, pretty much every game they’ve released, I’ve loved. It really seems like a great studio to me.

  • Mr. Meh says:

I would definately like to see THQ finish the Warhammer 40K MMO they started on.

I hear rough financial times have hit, and financing a first time venture into an MMO will be a challenge for THQ to finish by 2012. But that’s my little drooling fantasy. Right after SWTOR of course.

    • Winin says:

The Warhammer games do have lots of atmosphere. And they could have randomly generated “dungeon” crawl instances along the lines of Space Hulk.

  • 2nd says:

I just want an MMO that relies on my skills as a twitch player, and NOT how long I can sit at my pc and farm loot. Planetside 2?

  • Pitrelli says:

Im going to be controversial and say I think the new Starwars game is going to suck as an MMO.

Why? because it is going to be very heavily instanced and will be far too story orientated taking ‘themepark’ to a new level.

Sure the story telling will no doubt be great ala all Bioware games but why dont other MMOs follow WoWs lead to making a more open world? Sure areas in WoW are instanced but the use of clever mechanics like crossing a bridge or running through a cave masks it well. Nothing spoils my immersion like a big fat loading screen.

    Just my opinion

    • Slurms says:

I really don’t disagree with you. I have the same fears of it being more of a single player experience, but with the fact that it’s Star Wars being done by BioWare again….I’m hyped.

The art style is a little concerning to me as well(working on an article about that as a matter of fact).

Ultimately what will kill the game for me is if they really mess up the PvP. And the art style is a little concerning (working on an article about that as a matter of fact).

A Heroes of Might and Magic MMO would be awesome, assuming they learn from their mistakes with HoMM5.
