Interesting Stuff: Red Box Gaming
You’ve all seen them, these red monoliths which have brought about the doom of not only your local mom and pop video store, but also giants like Blockbuster. They’re in our grocery stores, outside of our pharmacies, taking only dollars at a time and offering you a night you’ll never forget. The color is appropriate for these media whores, and now it seems they want to go both ways.
That’s right, the Red Box will now be offering $2 a night video game rentals. I’ve never been a frequenter of video stores. As a kid, I would occasionally go to our local grocery and rent a game for the Super NES or Genesis, but that all stopped after the bank right next door was robbed as I was walking by. Mom wasn’t too thrilled.
I’ve also never used a Red Box. Movies have always been at a price point that I thought was fair to buy because I’m the kind of person who will watch a movie 20 times. Or 100 if it’s of Mallrats caliber (and I’m not joking, I used to watch it every day). But video games are another story. There are always some games that release that I’m not totally on board with. God of War is a prime example of something I would never pay full price for, but I could see renting it for a couple days to have the experience once. Trouble is I still never went out and rented it from anywhere local like Blockbuster or Hollywood Video (RIP) because it seems that anything that I really want to rent is never in stock when I go. So it always feels like a colossal waste of my time.
Enter the Red Box. It will be there on my way to pick up food from the grocery, or when I get rubbers from the pharmacy (even though they are bullshit). It may not have what I want stocked, but I’ll pass it by so often that I can always check. Gonna need a shitload of 2 dollar bills.
