Rift’s Missed Event Opportunity
I’ve been participating in the Rift world event, “Waves of Madness” this week, and I can’t help but think that there was a missed opportunity here.
The event consists of a couple new dailies that don’t take a whole lot of time to complete, so it gets quite repetitive. I will say though, that I love the system of giving the player a limited-time form of currency to use on event specific items. As a Runecrafter, I’m aiming my sights at the recipe which will allow me to imbue underwater breathing on an item. Alchemists get a recipe for a potion which grants the same ability, but in consumable form. But those who don’t craft fear not, there’s a pretty sweet necklace available which serves the same purpose (which I picked up last night).
For the Guardians at least, all but one of the daily quests forces you to dive underwater near the Sanctum, so the breathing buff really comes in handy since you’ll be doing it so much. Yet, every time I jump in the water, I’m reminded of the event’s title “Waves of Madness.” I get that it’s a clever name but….where are the waves? Why not a daily quest to hang ten? Make it a competition between players! The Big Kahuna could be crowned at the end of the event and given the Fishy Joes brand Walrus to ride on.
But seriously, I hope that the event picks up in the “interesting content” department as it opens up to more phases. After the first world event was pretty much botched, Trion really needs to prove that Rift can do something fun and unique. Either that or give us all walruses to ride on.

Yeah, there are some good recipes and buffs available. They keep the event vendors around a bit, you can look for them in the capital cities after the event is over. So if you still have some of the old currencies from the other events, keep them and you can pick something up later. They may even replay some of the events later, so I would not throw any unused event currency away.
