A Cataclysm Every Year!
I was attempting to corner the Small Egg market on World of Warcaft last night and I thought, “What could be in store for the game for the future? How are they going to do it?” It’s something I’ve asked before, but more along the lines of like how someone asks how Dane Cook get’s a movie role. It’s going to happen, there’s no way to understand HOW it happens, but it just does.
So can they top Cataclysm? If you think about it, this is what they have to do now. There is a bar that Blizzard constantly sets for itself every time they bring out an expansion pack for this monster of a game. It’s really what every developer attempts to do with any form of game’s iteration, but the ones who can continually make the new record on the high jump are the ones that stand out for us gamers.
So with that in mind, I think that anything Blizzard hands to its loyal WoW fanbase from here on will be met with great amounts of apathy if it’s not on the same level as Cataclysm. I think they now have to explore the idea of world changing events with every expansion. Players will be expecting to pay their 40 dollar cover charge to party and Blizzard needs to bring the good booze.

Blizzard is also working on a new MMO, code name Titan. Maybe they don’t have to top Cataclysm. Maybe they only need to limp along until the new MMO takes over. Or, it could end up being like EQ1 with 400 xpacs.
