Bring the noise!!

AV40I’ve had the opportunity to earn some extra coin by working some overtime the last few Saturdays and convinced my wife to let me use some of it for some new speakers for the PC. My Klipsch set finally died after 9 years of use, so I figured I’d start shopping around. I wound my options down to the M-Audio AV 40 Studiophile speakers last night and just as I was about to say, “yes, this is what I want” the wife, in her infinite wisdom (in case she reads this) piped in, “you know you’ll never be able to use those, right?” I gave the deer in headlights stare and she went on to explain that, since I usually only play when the kids are in bed, that I won’t really be able to have them very loud. She also stated that on the nights of the podcasting (or whenever else I use voice chat) she can hear everything I say from back in the bedroom. It’s not enough to keep her from sleeping, or wake up the kids, but she can hear me.

PC350So, replacing the speakers may be out of the cards right now. (need a bigger house damnit!) I have a decent set of headphones (Sennheiser EH 150′s)and a Logitech desktop mic, but I’ve had tons of setup problems with the mic since its a foot or so away from my grill. If I set the mic gain too high, it picks up too much noise. Maybe it’s time for a proper gaming headset. Back to the Internets!

There is a bevy of gaming headsets on the market. Ranging from $10 all the way to almost $200. With the money I saved, and the time that I spend with my PC, I wanted something nice. I’ve narrowed it down to the Sennheiser PC 350′s. Having never been let down by any of their products, I figured I would continue my loyalty with them. Plus, they look so nice. No longer will I look a total nerd while wearing a headset….just mostly. Plus, the mic is supposedly so great, I wont sound like a dork on the podcasts anymore. Sennheiser actually promises to make me sound just like Charlton Heston. Okay I made that up, I’ll still probably sound awful, but maybe I’ll come through a little crisper.

I’m curious, what’s your sound setup?

funny you mention this because I’ve been shopping around to replace my set up as well. One problem with shopping for headsets is not being able to get a good feel of them first (comfort-wise).
Also, I realize that you get better sound through closed type, but I like open type so that I can kind of hear whats going on in the house.

Heh, I just get the cheapest damn mic-headset I can find on Newegg every couple of months. They work well enough until they break.

hehe, but think about all the money you’ve spent on those…you could’ve had one really nice long lasting set =)

I use a cheapy set that has a decent mic. I use it for dictation, so it is pretty good quality. The rest is cheapo.

One nice thing to get is a mute/volume pod somewhere on the cord. Very handy since push-to-talk never seems to work well.

I have a pair of Sennheiser that look something like that. Not sure what model mine are. But I love them. Sound quality is good and I use it to podcast as well.

You want to hear what’s going on in the house? I don’t understand. =)

I’ve been using Razer Barracuda headphones, and I like them. They are comfortable and have 5.1 sound. The mic it has needs to be boosted in your OS, but otherwise I’m quite happy.

I got a pair of them. They fit on my head fine and don’t hurt my ears and my ears are not that small ! also great sound. The only thing I’ve noticed is they can get a bit hot as they are full cups. But this has an advantage that you cannot hear the misses calling for you, but she makes you jump right out of your skin when she is standing right behind you and you have not noticed :) Buy Buy Buy
