(MMORPG+FPS)-(MM+S)=?
A thought popped into my head, and i’m still trying to work it out. I figured typing it out might help, so bare with me.
Blizzard made mention recently, that it wasn’t possible (i.e. really hard) to do 100 vs 100 battles in an open player versus player environment. Whether that’s true or not (it’s not!), it got me wondering about possible small scale solutions to this problem. Looking at games like WoW and WAR where PvP seems to work at its best in instanced scenarios or battlegrounds. I truely enjoy the idea of a large scale fight, but I have to say I’ve had some of my most enjoyable moments while skirmishing with just a couple groups in WAR. Hell, some of the best times i’ve had online was running eight man in Dark Age of Camelot.
Think about that, and then look at some of the most popular PC games currently; Team Fortress 2, Call of Duty 4, Left 4 Dead. What do these games have in common? Numbers in the title! And the fact that they are all small in scale.
When will we see an RPG style adaptation of this form of combat? I’d love to see a character selection process much like in TF2, where you can pick your class, but then as you play you unlock new weapons, armor, abilities, etc. Still put an emphasis on the players abilities rather than equipment, make the unlockable equipment have different effects much like in TF2. For example, a cleric could get an optional hammer that does more damage, but reduces their healing. A warrior class could get a choice in shields and armor that could reduce or increase run speeds based on weight/armor factor, and weapons that would have a higher damage output, but reduce the ability to dodge or parry attacks. I could go on, but you get the point.
Just a thought, but I wanted to get your opinions. Would you play this kindof game? What problems do you see with it?

YO! slurms, im liking the site. its easy on the eyes.
so a game like you describe was made in the late 90′s or early 00s… well, sort of like you describe. There were different levels of weapons and armor for each class that you could pick up in the level. Each class had there own unique weapons and there were 3 or 4 classes.. and im trying to think of the name. hopefully as i write it will come to me.
there was a mage class that had different types of magic blasts, a sniper wand, an AoE wand with short range and… i forget the last one. You start off with a very basic wand each time you respawn, so it doesnt unlock new equipment with achievements, but it does have that fantasy aspect with specific class types.
there was also a ranger class with different crossbows, i only remember the repeater, and there was a melee class, like a knight if i remember right. I only played the mage or the ranger ;P
and i still cant remember the name! i think it was some version or relative of a might and magic game. i’ll try and dig through my game shelf to find it. Anyway, i loved that game, but i didnt find it until a few years after release and the graphics had not aged well. If they re-created a game like that i would totally play it because i agree the small PvP scene is what i enjoy… you might like Demigod
or wait on league of legends. they dont have a first person view, but the style of game is a pretty good PvP experience
Heya Sarc! Thanks for the compliment.
Don’t know that it would have to be a first person game. I’d prefer if it were 3rd actually.
Still need to pick up Demigod. =(
Was it Heretic? I think that was a Doom conversion like that. I also tried an Unreal Tournement conversion with swords and stuff, but it wasn’t that well done. Still seemed like a plain-jane FPS, not a fantasy RPG-ish game.
