Pazz’s Half-Assed Review of Wolfenstein (’09)
Okay, so this is my first post blogging here…or anywhere else for that matter. In fact, I don’t even use Facebook/MySpace. A lot of this can be attributed to the fact that I don’t know how to do all kinds of fancy links, inserts, etc and have a lack of heart to learn it. Anyway, I just picked up the new Wolfenstein today and man is it awesome so far.
The graphics of this game are beautiful, it’s really hard to explain. I mean, while you are conversing with your friends and shooting your enemies, you can forget that it’s not the real thing…well minus the whole mouse and keyboard of course. The other thing that caught me off guard is that the game is extremely well optimized and runs perfect (I run a GeForce 7 series). Before long you find your Medallion of Kick-Assery™ that allows you to make force shields, slow time, and many other nice cloak and dagger tricks to play with. It of course runs on a renewable energy source, the sources being “fountains” of blue stuff coming out of walls, wells, and drains. It should be noted that the game physically plays exactly like the recent Call of Duty games. Granted, you now have supernatural abilities thank to the Medallion of Kick-Assery™.
The game wastes no time whatsoever throwing you into the action. Almost immediately you start shooting up some Nazi’s. No sooner do you shoot some of those sucka’s you get some zero-g action thanks to explosions of suspicious weaponry those sneaky SS are smuggling on their trains. This leads to hilarious moments of jumping around killing helpless flailing Krauts. This is intermittently interrupted very rudely by nature taking command again, and it’s entirely possible to find yourself crippled, or stranded on a high ledge, pinned down by a handful of pissed off, confused men with guns all of a sudden. Regardless, it’s a lot of fun and sets the pace for the rest of the game.
After your first mission/escape, you meet up with your typical WW2 resistance group, a black market team that sells you all your upgrades for your weapons and magical powers, and of course the religious types who tell you to do things for the greater good…Hah! The cool part is between missions you end up back in the town these groups are scattered about in and you can take care of your upgrades, contacts, gather info, etc. It seamlessly of combines the playability of CoD, the para-normal awesomeness we suspect the Nazi’s were always guilty of, and a slight RPG element with the upgrades, and home-town deal. Make no mistake though, there are still patrols roaming the streets and alleys even when you finish a mission, so be careful! Also, the higher the difficulty, the more troops running around trying to find you.
Overall very immersive, tons of fun to play, and I’m only 2-3 hours in! I know, crazy right? I’ll be back with more info and further thoughts later in the week.

Go Pazz! Never heard of this game though. Sounds fun.
I like the whole “time shifting” thing going on in the FPS genre right now. I’m really looking forward to seeing Singularity in action. That and Darkest of Days.
