Pondering: Remember The Old Republic?

It’s the first month of a new MMO’s release. Everyone and their Cousin Ted’s girlfriend are talking about Rift. I think some people weren’t expecting to get sucked into another new MMO before Star Wars: The Old Republic or Guild Wars 2 hits the shelves, but plans change.

So far, plans have seemed to change for the better. Rift is a super solid game, and while a few people whose blogs I follow seem to have not been hit with the Ascended Cupid’s arrow, the rest of us are pleasantly surprised to have a game to keep our attentions (at least for a few months). But I want to know how you’ve reacted to the game. Is it just something the doctor prescribed to help with the pain until the next big game comes, or is Rift the pill that makes you forget?

Let me know in the comments!

I’m enjoying Rift. But I will say my excitement level has already leveled off a little bit. Unlike other MMOs that I played at release, there are already some days that I don’t log in at all. In fairness, I do have some real life things occupying my mind and time though. But I am wondering if this is only going to be a couple of months stint for me or if it will keep it’s appeal longer.

Like you said, it is a very solid game. What it has done is take aspects of other MMOs and fine tune them and combine them into one very polished game. But for me, there still isn’t anything “new” about it, other than perhaps the recurrent dynamic events. I’m still looking for that MMO that will give me something “new” and different. That being said, Rift is a very good game that I foresee playing at least a few months, if not longer.

Rift whilst fairly solid and enjoyable just didnt do it for me. I had a really fun time in the early start but when the official release started I just lost all motivation.

I can see why people enjoy it and I think it will be able to satisfy a half decent sized player base. I wont be one of them however so its back to being an mmo tourist until SWTOR launches

    • I can totally see why someone might be burnt out on this idea of an MMO. I kept myself in the dark about it and hadn’t played an MMO for a couple months prior, so that helped my appreciation of the game even more. Plus, you didn’t come play with us on Faeblight so there goes half your fun. =D

While I’m still considering buying Rift next month, it’s SWTOR I’m waiting for. Rift might be an enjoyable distraction until then. – Kraythur

SWTOR is the pill that makes me forget all. Board up the windows, doors and put the cat outside because I’m in for the long haul.

Rift just works. It is extremely refreshing to log into a game that just launched and not have to deal with broken in game systems and or a software client that crashes to desktop whenever it felt like it. Personally I stayed away from knowing anything about Rift. I told myself that I was done with shelling out money for one MMO to another MMO only to find disappointment. When I first heard of Rift I automatically labeled it as another disappointment and disregarded it. I was set not to buy anything until SWTOR. I didn’t look into Rift until just about every podcast that I listen to was talking about how great Rift was. That raised an eyebrow enough to make me start looking into the game. I got into the beta and the rest is history. For me Rift may or may not be the filler game until the release of SWTOR. It would be painful to run two subs but if I’m still having a blast in Rift when SWTOR comes out I would play both. I would probably need to start drinking some Game Day beer to offsite the cost. =)

I’m sure by the time SWTOR and GW2 release that Rift will have lost some of it’s luster but that’s a long way off. Honestly, I’m burnt out on all of the hype and trickling information about both of these games and have begun to actively avoid news about either.

    • Yeah, I’m REALLY excited about SW:TOR and I think GW2 could be great, but I’m happy Rift is here to ease the wait a bit. That said, I guarantee that by the time TOR beta starts up that I’ll be prepping a TOR podcast and losing sleep because of the light emanating from my lightsaber.
