Rift: Mining, and why some people are great

I’ve been going a little bit crazy the past couple of days. I started working 10 hours a day two weeks ago, so my work to sleep ratio has changed a bit. But the lesser amounts of sleep isn’t even what’s driving me bonkers. No, it’s my attempt to craft in Rift.

Let me preface by saying that I enjoy crafting in Rift. I’m going the Armorcrafting route (as I do in most MMOs it seems). At least around my current level (23) it feels useful, but not too deep. It’s easy to customize pieces and the only items that I wear that I did not craft were drops that are far more useful. Quest items seemed to be right alongside the craftable pieces in stats (some were slightly higher) but I recently gave up questing to focus more on crafting, rifting, and pvping.

But I digress; what’s driving me bonkers? MINING.

While frolicking through Freemarch, I found nodes rather easily. Stonefields is another story. The last two nights I’ve spent the hour I get to play running around looking for nodes, only to find one or two. I’m at the point where I really question if there are enough spawn points for the nodes, especially considering the size of the zones and the locations of some of the nodes I do see. Iron nodes (what I currently need) are often found right next to mobs. I typically wouldn’t have any issue with this. I like the idea that you’d have to find these things wherever they would naturally be exposed, but adding in the fact that I see so few of them brings another issue to the table; Ninjas.

Given that the ore is so hard to come by, people can be found scrambling for a node when it pops up on the minimap. Unfortunately, because many nodes are in the thick of enemies, you’ll sometimes find yourself going for one and have it stolen from under your nose while you’re busy fending off the riff-raff.

But last night gave me some hope. I had been looking around for Iron last night, and in my half hour I had only found one node. I was about to give up, when I happened to see the silver diamond show itself on my map. I headed in that direction and found a mob next to my target as if he was guarding the Queen. I tagged him and started hacking away, and then looked up to see a Mage running my way. I immediately thought, “oh great, Ninja.” But then he started casting on my target. At the same time, I saw a rogue riding in from behind him. I began to really get concerned about my precious. I figured they were teamed and he was just helping me as a distraction until his friend arrived to mine the Iron. So I hurried up with the target and right-clicked on that glowing bastard like it was a matter of life or death. SUCCESS. I won the race.

It seems that I was half right.

Right after I looted the chunks of metal love I say to the Mage, “Thanks for the help,” to which he replied, “Glad you got it before she did….I hate ninjas.”

I agree. Iron mines are far to few. Tin and copper were all over the place in Freemarch. One thing I dont get is why is tin and copper spawning in the first half of Stonefield. If Iron spawned thought out the entire zone it would help with the iron shortage.

Ninjas happen with wood and herbs as well. I’ve taken to literally standing on top of the node, making it completely obvious that is my intent. If someone steals it then, and it does happen, then it leaves little doubt that they are a ninja. For what it’s worth. I’m sure they can feel a twinge or something as I glare nastily at my computer screen.

  • Grimnir says:

Yo dawg, I got some iron in my bank. It pops up randomly in higher level zones instead of the appropriate metal so I’ve been clearing those nodes to get the good shit instead.

Perhaps we can work out some kind of deal.

Once the economy balances out some, you should be able to buy large quantities of greens on the Auction House and salvage them for all the metal you need… and don’t forget to salvage all the greens you create as well while leveling (unless you are turning them in for Work Orders).

Also, something else weirder is going on with the Iron supply… Artificer jewelry made with Silver Bars salvages into Iron Bars. This is a bug. Who knows, there might be a piece of back end code in the game that is keeping Iron from spawning because of the massive amounts of it being created by Artificers at the moment :-P

  • Mining nodes, artifacts and sparklies for achievements have all been ninja’d from right underneath my nose. Standing directly on top of it sometimes helps but nothing stops the ninja. Drives me bananas.

As a side note, it will be interesting to see how the whole “instanced node” thing works in Guild Wars 2. Hopefully it will reduce some frustration around this issue.

  • I was in the game when I saw that story in guild chat. I think that’s so great!

  • Dachartach says:

That’s always going to be a problem, because when you get enough people in one place the asshole quotient tends to be a lot higher. Also, looks like Rift has gotten the gold farmers’ attentions. Standing on the node and giving the thieves the stinkeye is likely to be as effective here as it is in every other game. But hey, if it makes you feel any better, I see iron nodes all the time. OO! Look, there’s one now!

And nothing sucks worse than runecrafting for getting resources. Dammit.

Lovely story! I hate ninjas to the bone.

It helps being an Elementalist though – my pet engages the “guard” and I happily snick away and mine the node! 8)

Pets are a great anti-ninja tool. Sick the pet on the mob so it gets aggro, harvest, then help the pet finish off Mr. Bad.

My Paladin has a 3 second stun that seems to be long enough to mine the node as well if you’re quick.

If only we could butcher people. I’m still foggy on why that isn’t allowed seeing as we’re already murdering them by the dozens. :(
