[Rift] Still Doing It For You?

cliffhanger

It’s been a rather hectic week here on Rancho Steve-o. With sick kids and then getting horrible sick myself for a couple days, I’ve not had a ton of energy to play, let alone talk about games. But now that I feel a ton better and with the meter beginning to point towards “normal” again, I’m noticing a bit of a mood swing.

It was a couple of weeks ago when I started to notice it, but especially so now that I’m really hankering to get my hands on my games; I don’t have a strong desire to play Rift, or really any MMO for that matter. It’s the same feeling I got earlier this year around the time that I gladly gave up playing any massive online games for a couple of months until Rift was released. But between the break and the flood of great people I’ve been playing Rift with, I was highly motivated to log on night after night. Yet now that I’m into the game for a couple months I’m beginning to question if it’s something I want to keep playing.

Don’t get me wrong, Rift has a ton of great qualities, it’s just that if I were to remove the people from the equation at this point, I don’t know that I see enough there to keep me interested. I’ve patched the game up and I plan on putting in some time this weekend. I have to be honest with you though; firing up a quick game of Monday Night Combat, or Magic: The Gathering, or Street Fighter IV (whenever the PSN gets back up), or a handful of other games sounds a lot more appealing to me.

Maybe it’s just because of my limited play time. To really get the most out of an MMO, you have to devote a decent amount of time to it, time that I’m increasingly not finding. Maybe it’s the feeling of doing the same thing over and over. I want to see what’s over the edge of the cliff, but the climb is getting a bit boring. Whatever the reason, I want to know if you’re in the same boat, or if you’ve still been enjoying the game. Let me know in the comments!

  • Nope. My boat is happy in Rift. Best MMO in a LONG time…

Luckily, I am not burned out on MMO’s, so it helps.

    Cheers

    This, I think.

I’ve been pulling away from Rift too, but not because its Rift, but because it’s an MMO. I’m not finding myself booting up some other MMO…instead I’ve been looking at single player games.

I’m a slow leveler anyway (too many alts) but then when my mom died right around the launch of Rift I fell way, WAY behind the crowd, and now I find the empty-ish low level areas aren’t so much fun. I can’t solo the Rifts and the few players around seem to ignore them so I’m left just questing, and just questing is boring.

I suppose the answer is to push on to 50 where everyone else is.

    • “I can’t solo the Rifts and the few players around seem to ignore them so I’m left just questing, and just questing is boring”

Yeah, been kind of bumming me out to. Every time I get on I seem to notice less and less people attacking Rifts because there’s just no one around. Especially worrysome since I’m pretty sure Faeblight is one of the highest populated servers (but maybe it’s the other side that’s highly populated).

I still plan on playing casually, but I know that casually playing an MMO, for me, eventually leads to just not playing.

  • I’m still enjoying Rift immensely as a casual game. I have had very little play time lately but I plan on devoting at least 1-2 nights a week for a steady crawl to 50.

But…I’m kinda in your boat. I’m finding I prefer non-MMO games for the most part. Partially because of the time issue and partially because I can never be on an even level with my friends that play more or less than me. (Actually…that’s a HUGE issue for me)

    Glad you’re feeling better, man!

Rift is still my go-to game between fits of drunken debauchery and providing moustache rides for the ladies at the fine local drinking holes around here (one leads into the other). 50 is the place to be, srsly. I have a couple friends that can’t help roll two different toons for each class in each faction and scratch their head in wonder how I’m still enjoying the game.

Well, I’m where the action is. PvP is more reasonable at the top as the 10 level difference hits way harder in the early game. We get a full gamut of dungeons to pick from and they’re ALL fairly relevant as far as gear drops go, whereas the early game you’re lucky to have two at a time worth running. We get awesome unique Raid Rifts that are 10x what the standard game rifts are. We get epic quests that literally drag you across the map (and scare lowbies occasionally) to complete them. There’s a fully fleshed out end-game here where the first 49 levels were likely intentionally left thin.

Look at every other end-game oriented MMO that released with a TON of leveling content. All of it goes to waste once the herd moves along. I think Rift picked up on that trend and made sure the end-game destination was worth more than the ride getting there.

    • That sounds interesting to me, and maybe that’s the way it should be. I think part of my issue is that I enjoy the 1-50. The carrot on a stick every level of new abilities and feeling more powerful. Problem is that I haven’t felt very motivated in Rift lately. Maybe if I keep chipping away it’ll get better. =P

Aion burned me out pretty hard on MMOs… to the point that I needed to take a few weeks off from Rift even though it’s clearly a better game than Aion. I made it from level 1 to 40 in Rift in the first month and have only gotten to 43 in the 3 weeks since.

Again this is not a Rift thing at all, it’s an MMO thing. I’m just having more fun playing LittleBigPlanet 2 and Swarm on PS3… and also Portal 2 on PC, since its launch coincided SOOOOO nicely with the PlayStation Network implosion :-)

I’ve had some other stuff going on this past few weeks, Drama and all that, plus I think there’s a bit more on the horizon, but I’ll be sticking with it a while, hopefully getting into some expert dungeons and end level rifts and raids. I missed the 20 minutes the next two phases of the last event were on, but that hardly puts me in the minority, it seems.

  • Professer says:

The journey should be the fun part of the game. Its part of the principles of the genre… the grand adventure towards the goal at the end. The travels and journey towards the grand goal are supposed to be epic.

Endgame is bullshit. Total design flaw in my eyes. Opened ended sandbox games shall always be superior.

But thats just me. I’m right though, from my own perspective. As its really just varying opioins and play styles. Kinda a sandbox vs themepark, us vs them, basic thing.

  • Professer says:

    SO to answer the question,

No. Rift never has done it for me at all.

  • Azurantine says:

Im just returning to Rift now, looking quite forward to it as I recall I left just after hitting Prestige rank 4, so time to get the max prestige and woop some buttocks hehe. Assasins FTW :P
