Rift: Take two….and….action!

I really shouldn’t have. I know deep down it was a mistake. I have a handful of other games I’m playing and enjoying. So adding to the pile, with an MMO no less, is the equivalent of throwing everything from your inbox at work in the trash.

But, with a good deal of Amazon credit just sitting there dying to be spent, and an urge to give the game another shot, I spent 15 bucks on a downloadable 30 day time card for Rift. I think the convenience of just being able to click a few buttons and have the account activated again was what sealed the deal. If I would have been required to go buy a time card at a store or order it and wait I probably would have talked myself out of it. But here I am, back in Rift.

Like with many MMO’s, I left Rift amidst heavy inner debate. I had a huge problem identifying what class made the most sense for me to play personally. I enjoy playing a tank in most games, but something about Rift’s meat shields didn’t work out for me. If I wanted to be a proper tank, it felt too boring. If I wanted to be more of the in your face kind of guy, I felt too useless.

The beauty of the game is that you’re able to change up your role on the fly, but I never found the right one for me in the Warrior. I constantly wondered if a switch to a Cleric would have been a wise choice. Visions of my Friar from Dark Age of Camelot danced in my head, yet not wanting to repeat everything I’d just done in Rift caused me to continue to mull over the decision. Eventually I left the game out of a mix of boredom and burnout, but I always wondered if my class choice was part of my problem.

This time around, I’m picking the game up fresh. I rolled a Cleric. Druid focused for now, but eager to try out all of my options. I’m also going to give less of a care to PvP in Rift. I really want a PvP focused MMO with Rift-like polish to exist, but Rift just isn’t it, and I shouldn’t try to make it into something it’s not. If they ever expand the game, I can hope that they put some form of emphasis on it, but I know it most likely won’t come to pass.

During my second go at the game, I think I’m going to give more care to seeing everything and maybe focus on completing objectives I passed up before. Things like artifact collecting and dungeon running. Hopefully between that and the change of class, I’ll be able to play Rift with eyes unclouded. Wish me luck.

I played a Warrior to cap (Riftblade, Reaver), http://rift.zam.com/en/stc.html?t=0cELA..EhozdsMMuzz.Vuoxuzkcc

Had fun ripping through all the content. Never did do much PvP nor group dungeon stuff.

I also played a Cleric (INQ/CAB) but got only midway.
I could rip through content with it too.

that’s the build I was following.

Again it was mostly solo…didn’t do much pvp nor group stuff. I did try a healing build for a few times I grouped but I wasn’t very good. I figure I just wasn’t used to the Rift style of healing since I’m a hell of a healer in other more traditional style mmos.

Clerics are easily the most versatile class in the game. If you have troubles finding something that works for you, the Cleric has you covered. Stick it out to 50 and you’ll have pretty much every single choice of playstyle covered in one way or another.

Yeah, and with 5 roles to choose from, you’re sure to find something good. I have a tough as nails survival-based grinding build, a tanking role, and a healing one. I tried a shaman heave melee type, but it played so similarly to my standard grinder that I forgot a few things-mainly that the survivability was much lower on the shaman. So my standard pull 6 or 7 things to me and just aoe them all down wouldn’t work as well, and I got hosed.

I too have been out of rift a bit, more because of my weird schedule than anything. I’m never on when anyone else is, and my days off are in the middle of the week. When I get in after work most nights, I usually hang out with folks on skype, read, watch a little tv, or go right to sleep. I’ve still got some more time in my initial subscription, but I haven’t been at it too much.
