X-Com is being sequelized….oh snap

So my new schedule is get up at 5am, go to work at 5:30, leave work at 4pm, pick up the kids, come home and eat supper, take a bath at 8pm after my son goes to bed, put my daughter to bed at 8:30 (sometimes 9) and then go play on the PC if that wife of mine has to do paperwork (which is almost always). So it really hasn’t worked out too bad with me working 10 hour days. I just feel a bit more tired going into work, and I don’t have that extra time before getting kids to finish up posts I wrote during break at work and get them on the site which is why I’m sitting on 4 articles right now. But before finishing those, I need to get this one out.

I woke up this morning after a pretty good night of sleep caused by my son not waking us up in the middle of the night. He stayed at his grandparents. I got myself dressed and sat in front of the PC to skim through articles that had popped up on Kotaku since the day before and one made my eyes widen, shattering the rheum that was holding them somewhat shut. X-Com is getting a sequel.

HO LEE SHIT

My dreams were coming true! Wait, I was still in a fog, maybe this was a dream. So I stabbed myself in the thigh with a titanium spork and realized that it was not, and that I now needed a new pair of jeans. I was immediately psyched beyond all belief. I’ve longed for a proper sequel for X-Com. That game was genius on so many levels. From building bases across the world, to the micromanagement of your research and construction of new equipment, to turn based fighting with alien scum, I cannot think of another game that covered so many mechanics, but put them together so splendidly.

So I read on to find out more details on what could be one of my most anticipated games ever to read that 2K games, creators of Bioshock were making it. Hmm, okay, well it will have some seriously awesome art direction. That will be good. But are they going to keep it turn based or go real time with it? Reading….reading…..

…..

Oh for fuck’s sake.

A first person shooter?

Listen 2K, you have the license to one of the most beloved PC titles in history. This is all you have to do:

1. Take the original X-Com.
2. Make it look up to date
3. Release it
4. Profit

I see no reason to tie in (read: drag through the mud) the X-Com name to a modern first person shooter. That’s like someone remaking Casablanca as a horror movie.

Oh man you’re so right Slurms! I love X-com too back in the day so I recently repurchased it from steam for two bucks. The aged graphics bumped my enjoyment of it I gotta admit. I certainly would welcome a sequel that kept the core gameplay but improved the graphics.

  • The tension came from hitting “End Turn” and watching the carnage (or lack thereof) unfold. Would an alien come around the corner and blast my dudes? Did I leave enough action points on my heavy gunner? etc.

Elemental claims to be influenced by Xcom, so maybe that will have that turn-based excitement I crave.

Casablanca as a horror movie, now that would be awesome!

  • Aruth says:

Turning a sequel into a simplified/consoltarded FPS worked pretty well for sales of Fallout.

These guys probably picked up the license and name cheap, and now will sell it to the xbox’ers to make a quick buck.

Welcome to the future. It’s dumber, and has crappier graphics, but hey its more accessible!!!

    • To be fair though, Fallout 3 is still an RPG at its core, and a good one at that. I was very worried when I heard about Bathesda making the switch from turn based/top down to fps, but it worked.

If 2K pulls this off somehow I’d be astonished. Not saying they can’t! It’s quite possible they make it like Mass Effect but with more emphasis on research and micromanagement outside of the combat.

I’m very skeptical for now, I’ll just hold on to hope that they don’t tarnish the series good name. Or did Xcom Enforcer already do that?

Also, where the F is my Pong! FPS reboot?

  • Shadow War says:

I guess I’m the odd man out, and never played the original. Will have to look into it.

  • Aruth says:

XCOM & XCOM2 were very good tactical turn based games. I’m not sure how well they hold up nowadays.
I mean some great games like Dungeon Keeper or Planescape for instance just look like crap on modern widescreen monitors.

It’s quite good, but since time has changed our expectations of games, it seem very slow paced.

      Yes, it did.
