Dust 514, PS3 exclusive…sign me up

Dust 514 concept

There seems to be some grumbling about the decision to make Dust 514, the first person shooter counterpart to the EVE Online MMO, a Playstation 3 exclusive. I don’t think it’s a bad move.

The PS3 has shown it can deliver FPS battles on much larger scales than anything else out there, and do so without harming the experience. Much of the trailer that was shown off yesterday at E3 actually reminded me a lot of MAG, but with the more futuristic look of EVE Online. It looked big, action packed, and it was something I wanted to be a part of. Have a look if you haven’t already.

Another possible reason for the PS3 exclusivity is that Sony looks to me more open with PC integration than Microsoft, ironically. With the recent inclusion of Steamworks, Sony has already shown a willingness to work with developers on cross platform support while Microsoft remains xenophobic to its own history. Now, I would have preferred it be a PC exclusive title, but I think the market for FPS’ is largely on consoles at this point, so it’s really not a bad move to make if CCP wants to ensure people are playing Dust. The one worry I have, is that console gamers tend to be a bit more finicky than most PC gamers, so the game’s lifespan is in question. Dust will have to be an absolutely dynamite experience to keep them on board for years, or even months, to come.

I’ve tried playing EVE multiple times, but after about a month of playing, I just lose steam. The game just doesn’t keep my attention. That’s unfortunate because I love hearing stories from EVE. So maybe Dust will be how someone like me can be involved in the game’s universe. It’s way too early to tell if the game is going to work out well for CCP, but I already have a fanciful idea in my head of being the General Veers to someone’s Admiral Piett.

Okay, maybe that’s a bit too fanciful.

    /agreed on all counts.

I see a lot of accusations of Sony paying for the exclusive (funny because back when MS paid for exclusives, everyone was fine with it) but I think this is a technology decision and nothing more.

Now CCP and Sony ought to bring out an EVE-themed PS3 bundle and maybe sell it for a small discount to current EVE subscribers!

I’ll be happy to work along side you in Dust. I too have often thought that EvE would be a fun game to play but I’ve never taken the plunge especially after hearing about all the backstabbing and untrustworthy worthy stuff people do to each other. Besides I like my action to be mindless slaughter not well thought out financials. lol

So when the game is launched I’d be happy to join any Multiplaying.com team.

I’m sure Rer will be able to throw some work your way, If they’re sticking to the model of the standard EVE players making out contracts and rewards for people to do in DUST. EVE was always pretty interesting for me to read about, but I never tried playing after I took the time on a trial. It’s like the fighting games, they’re more fun for me to read about than to play.

Trust me, if DUST really does turn out the way most of us EVE Vets are hoping, Null-Sec space is about to get a LOT more interesting come 2012.

Random FPS players f’ing up my Planetary Structure? I’ll just siege your asses from SPACE BIATCH!

(But seriously, I think the reason its a PS3 exclusive is because either Microsoft didn’t wanna play ball or just made it economically less desirable to partner with them. Either way, I think DUST will be just fine as a PS3 exclusive).

And here’s to hoping for a PS3 + EVE combo deal, I’d buy that in a heartbeat!
