From the Forums: Frustrations of a Console Gamer
Here’s a guest post via the forums by Devin, a.k.a. Takzenen. Enjoy!
I’ve always been a “Jack of All Trades” kinda guy. I’ve always fit this “Jock Nerd” type well. I played all kinds of sports when I was younger, and I’m always up for a game of backyard football or a pickup game of ‘hoops, while at the same time I really love me some Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or League of Legends. The first game I ever played was Mech Warrior 2, a series to this day I love. Then I was given an original Playstation by my sister, which came with Rayman and Mortal Kombat (My mother wouldn’t let me play because she was afraid of me being “desensitized” to violence. Now I’m joining the Military, yeah, it really worked didn’t it ‘Ma?) and from there I fell in love with consoles. The controller, to me, just feels leaps and bounds more intuitive than a keyboard and mouse (A real gaming mouse would probably change my tune here), and I’m quite aware of adapters for controllers -> PC. I won’t turn this into a PC vs. Console article, but when it comes to Console FPS, I’m king babay! Many times in Modern Warfare I’d end matches 33-2 or 34-4. My best record to this day is 38-1 (M-16 with a silencer, UAV jammer, deep impact, and Bandoleer ftw). With PC MMOs I’m a beast when it comes to PvP and love stomping (insert enemy faction here) into oblivion.
I’m a min-maxer to the core, and quickly figure out what I did wrong in the last fight, and what I can do better next time to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Rarely do I call “OP!” (okay maybe uncommonly) but I only ever come to that conclusion when there’s nothing that I see I could have done to counter or prevent that, including team makeup (see; Spiritmasters in Aion with their god forsaken fears). Now here comes Global Agenda, and to be frank, I suck. I feel like I was a big fish in a small pond, now I’ve been released into the ocean and quite frankly, I’m getting eaten alive. Oh sure, every now and then I’ll have a decent game, but most of the time I’ll find myself lucky to get a kill, and settling (quite happily mind you) more often than not for assists. My win:loss ratio is beyond terribad. I’ve won control TWICE in my career (that’s including beta).
I’ve talked about it with friends who are PC FPS types, and they tell me it’s just practice, as with any game. Funny thing is, I was telling them the same thing about Modern Warfare on the console, but that advice JUST ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH! It doesn’t cut the cheese, as some weird person would say. I’ve been practicing, and my progress is coming at a snail’s pace at best. They also tell me a big part in GA is team composition. Now, this does hold some water, but excuses for losing only lead to more losses, as my old coach would say. I’m used to single handedly winning for my team when it comes to FPS games, whether it’s pwning some noobs in Halo 3 or tearing someone a new asshole in Gears of War 2. Of course, I’ve lost matches where I’ve had amazing games, but everyone else on my team was clinically….special is the word I’ll go with. And of course there’s always a bigger fish in the sea (normally a prepubescent 12 year old who’s screaming “You just got rolled noob!” while he castrates everyone on your team at the same time). But I refuse to fall into the shadows of mediocrity in GA. Second place is first loser, and winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.
Whatever, guess it’s back to practicing and nerd raging so hard I’m about to put a hole in my monitor screen.

OMG that pic made me do a double take =p
Ah console games. I don’t dabble in those much these days, I leave that to my son hehe. I once heard some kid screaming filth at him on Halo, I think I scarred that kid for life >.< For that reason I couldn't play (online) console games, too many little guys on them.
But frankly, they don't have the lasting power a PC game or MMO offers, for me at least.
LESS QQ MOAR PEW PEW.
Oh, and you can always blame Scion! =D
I use a Nyko Air-Flo (X-box clone) with Pinnacle Game Profiler, which lets you program the 13 buttons, 2 joysticks and Dpad to Keyboard buttons, and combinations, like Left shoulder Tab, Right shoulder Space, Left Trigger Shift, Right Trigger Control (or Alt) depending on the game. Made WoW playable when messed up forearm-muscles, shoveling snow. The Thumbs still worked~!
