Sony, now is the time to Move

Please continue reading this post with the understanding that I am a person who owns a PS3, I own the Move, I own a Wii, but do not own an Xbox 360 or Kinect. Nor have I even played the Kinect. On top of that, I wasn’t sold on the Move until I had the chance to sit down and play it. So take everything I say with a huge LUMP of salt.

I think that the Kinect looks damn interesting. Due to all the shaky reports I heard up until its launch, I was highly skeptical of the hardware and very happy with my Move purchase. Now that it’s out, it seems it actually works! I’ve heard some downer reports, but I’ve also heard and seen some very neat things. I’m still happy with my Move purchase, but I hope that Sony uses the down-side of how Microsoft is marketing the Kinect to their advantage to make me even happier.

I understand the marketing for Kinect, I really do. They’re trying to stake a claim to the market which is currently dominated by Nintendo. Younger kids and housewives don’t really spend a lot of time with Microsoft’s pre-Kinect era hardware, and why should they? They’ve done quite well with the teen-through-middle aged crowd but have hardly appealed to anyone outside it. So expectedly, but unfortunately, the Kinect launch software is doing nothing for me. There’s not a single game that is shouting, “take me home you game lover!” Instead, I’m observing other people’s experiences and while I’m jealous of the interaction they’re having with the technology, I’m happy that I didn’t fork over the money for admission to the club. It has the potential to make me a believer, and a buyer, but it’s just too much for so little for me personally.

Sony needs to use this marketing opportunity. They have done a sub-par job thus far with selling the Move. There are a couple funny commercials, but even they are trying to target the same non-core, Wii audience that Microsoft is trying to court. This needs to change. Sony, get out there and show off the fact that you have M.A.G. with Move support. Show off the more interesting aspects of Sports Champions like Gladiator and Volleyball. Show off Fight: Lights Out and Time Crisis. And most importantly, right now before the holidays, show off what you have planned for the future of Move. Show everyone whatever you can muster of the Move enabled Killzone 3 and Little Big Planet 2.

Do alot more of this:

Sony, get Kevin Butler on the damn Move horse and let him ride!
